Here at the MS Therapy Centre Lothian we have three physiotherapists who share vast experience in helping people with neurological conditions. Gillian Robinson, Matt Spina and Manolis Sfakianakis have a specialist interest in Multiple Sclerosis and are committed to keeping up to date with all the key advances in this area. Our physiotherapy service is now open to anyone with any condition. We just need you to fill in our registration form and make an appointment. Charges for Physiotherapy are £20 for MS Clients and £30 for everyone else and appointments last around 45 minutes.
Specialist Neurological Physiotherapy for All!
Physiotherapy assessment can be useful for EVERYONE! Input from our service is considered an essential component of the management of many long term conditions, including MS. Physiotherapy has been shown to help sustain mobility and independence, and improve long term employability prospects. And although the earlier we are involved the better, it’s never too late!! Some of the things we can help with are:
- Balance and mobility problems
- Pain relief
- Joint stiffness
- Spasticity management
- General exercise & fitness advice
- Advice on transfers
- Advice for carers
We highly recommend that everyone has an assessment even if you feel you have no current physical concerns. Wouldn’t it be lovely for us to tell you that you are in fine fitness?! And for those of you who are long overdue a review of those boring exercises you know you should be doing, come along and we’ll see if we can help refresh your enthusiasm!
And for anyone who has been recently diagnosed with MS, it is really useful to have an assessment as soon as possible. This allows us to gain a baseline level of your physical strength and movement, so that if things change in the future, we have something to compare it with.
What does an assessment involve?
Essentially we need to know all about you. From the information you give us, we will decide what we need to look more closely at in the physical assessment. All of this will help to direct us to tailoring a treatment programme just for you!
Physiotherapy Treatment Options
Once we have worked out a plan for you, it may be appropriate for you to try out some of our equipment. In our physiotherapy area we have:
- Motorised and standard upright exercise bikes
- Electric standing frame
- Parallel bars
- Various walking aids (can be used to trial)
- Dumbells and wrist/ankle weights
- Resistance band
- TENs machines (for pain relief)
- And many other smaller pieces!
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
One of our physiotherapists has training in FES. FES is most often used to manage a dropped foot, which can help to improve walking pattern, and reduce the energy required in walking. This involves using an electrical signal to stimulate muscles in the lower leg during walking. Once a person has been assessed as suitable, the units used for this can be fitted by our physio and issued on a trial basis.
Physiotherapy Exercise Classes
Exercise is a vital ingredient in the specialised self-management service we offer. This complements the traditional hands on work.
Classes are aimed at supporting maintenance of fitness and mobility, and can also be used as part of a rehabilitation programme through structured and supervised sessions. Seated and standing classes are available and can cater for a wide range of abilities.
The current timetable for classes and physiotherapy leaflet can be viewed here.
Before joining a physiotherapy class, please make a 1:1 appointment with one of our physiotherapists, who will be able to advise you on the best class for you.
