HOW WE STARTED
The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre Lothian is a locally based, grass roots charity that has been providing support for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) across the Lothians, the Borders and South Fife since 1984. We offer self-management support through a co-ordinated, holistic and person-centred approach, assisting people living with MS to manage and make informed decisions about their lives.
We may be a small charity, but we are a big community and we understand the impact of a diagnosis of a long-term health condition and how it can affect your life. We are here to remind you that you are stronger than you think and that you can live your best life with the right support.
New Centre Protocols
Your safety is our upmost concern, so, to provide our services in the safest way possible, we have developed a series of new protocols for clients coming to the centre. Please note that our current centre opening hours are 9am to 5pm.
Further measures to protect the population from the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) have been announced by the First Minister as Scotland faces an upsurge in cases. The new restrictions focus on no household visits, gatherings and closing times for all hospitality settings.
This remains an uncertain and worrying time for everyone, so we will continue to provide our restricted and limited centre-based services in compliance with current guidance alongside our online physiotherapy services and group classes. Please keep an eye on our website for up-to-date information about these services.
What is MS?
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a lifelong condition that affects the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of symptoms, such as blurred vision, difficulty walking, muscle stiffness and spasms, problems with balance and co-ordination, etc.
It can develop at any age, whether you are young or old. Although it commonly develops in people in their 20s or 30s. There are three types of MS; Relapsing Remitting MS, Primary Progressive MS and Secondary Progressive MS. Each type differs in terms of the worsening and rate of onset of symptoms and the frequently of relapses and periods of remission.
To learn more about which type of MS you have and how we can help you manage your new lifestyle, please visit our resource centre.
